Even if you don’t participate in Google+ regularly, it’s important to set up your profile to claim authorship on your blog posts, and so that people who do use Google+ frequently can find you. When creating your Google+ profile, you’ll notice that you can add both a profile photo and a cover photo — just like Facebook. To keep things nice and complicated, the profile photo is on top of the cover photo, the right side of your cover photo will get cut off, and the left side has an arrow shape. Fun!
Here is the only Google+ photo guide and template that you will need to quickly customize your Google+ profile.
How to create a profile photo with the correct dimensions
The profile image is very easy — it just needs to be 250 x 250 pixels. This will size down perfectly for the feed thumbnail, so there’s nothing extra you need to do there.
How to create a cover photo with the correct dimensions
Your cover image needs to be 940 x 180 pixels. However, once you upload your photo, it right side will be cropped so that the total width will be 900 pixels. Then, because of the placement of the profile picture (with its 6px white border) right above the cover photo, you really only have 625 pixels to work with.
To make this easy for you, I have created a photoshop template that makes it easy for you to see the space you have to work with.
This template will also make it easy for you to creatively tie your profile photo and cover photo together.
How to upload your cover photo
To upload your cover photo, hover over the cover photo space and click Change cover photo.
Then click Upload, and find and select the cover photo on your hard drive. Once you upload the photo, you can click and drag the photo to reposition if necessary. But if you used the template I provided, you won’t need to do this.
You’ll then have a Google+ profile with images that look professional instead of being clipped and cut off.
