If you’re not on Twitter yet, I recommend that you stop reading this article and sign up for a Twitter account. Twitter is a microblogging platform, where you’re limited to updates of 140 characters. You broadcast these short messages to your “followers” (the equivalent of a friend or connection), who can be friends, coworkers, peers in your industry, or even celebrities, politicians, and other public figures.
If you need to be convinced, here are the top 12 reasons to be on Twitter:
1. Mingle with the influential
I never would have talked about houseplants with the CEO of Zappos.com if it wasn’t for Twitter. It’s a great place to connect with CEOs, top bloggers, and even celebrities. It takes a bit of effort (and having a decent following yourself doesn’t hurt) to get replies, direct messages, and better yet follows from the most-followed individuals, but by following them you can keep up to on what these individuals are reading and talking about.
2. Promote your content
Once you establish a following, you can tweet (post a message) updates/new posts on twitter and are very likely to get clicks. I’ve found that my click-through rate on Twitter is pretty decent, and if you post about something viral in nature, people might retweet (repost your message), exposing your link to all of their followers as well. Use a service like snipurl to track how many clicks your tweet links are getting.
3. Stay aware of hot topics
To keep in touch with what’s hot, whether it’s celebrity gossip or industry buzz, follow people with similar interests as you and industry professionals. You can find them using search tools like Twellow. The people with the most followers are the ones who will probably have the most interesting links and news to share. You can also see which twitter topics generate the most discussion by browsing Twitter Search.
4. Direct traffic
Twitter can be used to bring attention to a new product, a friend’s post, a book you loved, a hilarious YouTube video, and so on. Even if you need votes or are trying to get votes for something, post the link and ask nicely, and your followers will vote if they agree with you.
5. Update from anywhere
Twitter is something you can carry with you wherever you go. If you see something weird on the street, an advertisement that impressed you, want to report a severe traffic jam, whatever, wherever, you can tweet it right from your cell phone. Just set up your SMS Twitter number to text your tweet, so you don’t even have to use the internet. You can also choose to receive texts when your tweeple tweet or DM you, but if you have a ton of contacts you might want to stay away notifications.
6. Forces you to be a better writer
The 140 character limit forces you to be concise. Brevity makes it easy to absorb a message. That’s why you rarely see taglines longer than 5-8 words. After a month of using Twitter, you’ll be surprised how easy it is to fit an entire stream of thought into two lines of text.
7. Helps build web presence
Being on Twitter will help you built your network and establish trust amongst your followers. You’ll gain exposure for yourself, you blog, and your website. To really succeed at building your web presence, I recommend customizing your Twitter background (I’ll be adding free templates and backgrounds here soon!).
8. Real-time updates, rapid responses
On Twitter, you can reach out to your followers immediately. And if you have a question, just ask it, and many times you’ll get a quick response. I love getting quick opinions and recommendations from my followers, and many people on Twitter tend to go out of their way to research something for you. If this happens, be sure to return the favor.
9. Twitter’s there in case of emergency
When the terrorist attacks hit Mumbai, the news spread on Twitter before it even hit CNN. There was another situation where a student Twittered his way out of an Egyptian jail. These scenario might be extreme, but Twitter is a way to reach tons of people fast, especially if you’ve established a large following and it’s retweeted. In case of emergency, your followers will be there for you, as strange as that might sound.
10. Time management tool
I wouldn’t recommend just using your Twitter as a to-do list because your followers will quickly get bored with you. But if you’re on a tight schedule, Twitter about it and encourage your followers to get on your case if you haven’t finished by your deadline. It’ll be motivating to get your stuff done if you can show off to your followers that you met your goal.
11. It’s downright fun
Twitter’s fun, which is as good a reason as any to join. You can see a new side of your friends, share interesting articles and videos, and learn some really cool stuff. And it’s fun to tweet back and forth, and see people retweet your tweets.
12. Not too time-consuming
It takes less time to post a link on Twitter than it does to bookmark it on StumbleUpon or Digg. It also takes less time to build a meaningful network. And because of the 140 word limit, you’re not pressured to write a lot (like you would when blogging), and it won’t take too long to read through the latest Tweets. If you become obsessed (like many people do), then Twitter can become time consuming. But it’s easy and fast to become active on Twitter.
Add to the list: what’s your top reason to twitter?

Sounds brilliant. I had a play on Twitter a few months back and it kind of just slipped past me, I didn’t think it was going to be that big. I have been proven wrong, so it’s time to reclaim my account!
You just made me consider this. I will learn more right now
Great post!

I would say my main reason is networking with like minded individuals. I have met so many cool people as a result of using Twitter.
I would also note that about 6% of my web traffic comes from twitter and I rarely tweet my own links. So this means people that are curious are proactively clicking through to my blog. Kind of a cool side benefit.

I might have to give it a try now. I really couldn’t get past the creep factor before. The problem now is that it’s blocked by our firewall at my office…

I wish more people I knew used twitter, as it seems like one of those things that is better for people that one knows in person than trying to find new people for.
By the way, I was just looking at your page on Blog Catalog and I noticed that you are in Cambridge (close to where I go to school… across the river) and that your major is also the same as mine… advertising.
I was wondering how that is working out for you. The major, I mean.
I have a Twitter account, but have not been using it quite as well as you have described here, thank you. I had not heard of Zappos.com, must be an American brand I guess, so I took a peek at his site

I’m meeting new people in my business field all of the time. It’s great to make connections all over the world and future business partners.
I am new to Twitter and am enjoying it so far. I really just find it fun, and it’s quick to maintain. Really handy stuff!
Having been brought back to this post – the problem is knowing how to split your time and you friends on all of the verious “Twiter” type sites including Stumble etc. as there are so many of them!

This is a great post Diana. Thanks for sharing it. I’m a twitter user who has no products or services to sell. I was inundated by marketers when I first got a twitter account. I was also inundated by followers who spent all day long informing each other about what they were eating and where they were.
In these days of economic distress and no more easy credit there are fewer people who are responding to advertising in the print media. The overkill of advetising on billboards, buses, businesses etc. has led to a rebound reaction of “advertising blondness”. People are meeting in social networks and the business people and marketers are following them there intent on marketing to them. I’m not a consumer drive materialist and I am “advertsing blind”.
I assessed twitter’s value to me as a social networking tool with regard to promoting my own posts. I assessed the noise to sound ratio and then I dumped hundreds of followers, who use twitter to create a false authority based on broadcast range, as opposed to creating authority based on quality of contents in their posts, the number of comments they receive, their ability to create a blog centered community of faithful readers (subscribers) and I protected my tweets.
I use my twitter account to chat with freinds. And I use it to let them know when I publish a post. I am willing to re-tweet their post publication tweets to me and they are willing to do the same for mine. That’s where it ends. I refuse to spend hours of every day creating false authority by establishing a huge broadcast presence based on a huge number of pseudo-freinds.

I discovered your website on Blogcatalog, I’ve just asked you a question in one of the forums.
Good list Diana but I still have no idea what to say on Twitter. I signed up and thought what now?
I am not interested in hearing what other people are eating or going to the supermarket to buy so I am not sure if Twitter is really for me.
How did you start using it?
Good website, I’m subscribing.

@ timethief Thank you for a very insightful comment! I know that some people’s solution to the Twitter noise is to have two accounts: one to promote their blog, follow/get followed, get links to followers’ blogs, etc., and another for friends-only. Even though many people retweet and link to other people’s posts without having their own content, I still find their links useful and their opinions valuable. It’s all a matter of being picky about who to follow.
@ Michelle, your comment inspired a blog post! Hopefully it can answer your “what now” question. http://ustandout.com/index.php/social-networks/what-should-you-tweet-about/
Hi,
I’ve read good things about Twitter but I’m not there and I don’t know if I ever will.
I’m just not the “follower” kind of guy, although there are quality blogs that I follow.
Building my opinion based upon my beliefs is one of my characteristics.
Of course that if I should guess that Twitter would get me lots of traffic to my blog….
From all the strategies and social websites, together with lots of blogs that practically say the same thing, in my opinion it’s quality and relevant content, mixed with a good dose of creativity that helps to an organic growth of a web presence.
Have a great week,
José
Meeting really cool people on Twitter! Thanks for this list!

Great article! Will pass it along to my blogger friends who are still a little reluctant to open a Twitter account.
I liked the 12th reason- Not too time-consuming. I used to read news and blogs on Google reader. With Twitter I 'follow' websites and bloggers to see the latest updates.
great post
How to Make Money from Twitter? Is it possible to earn from twitter without any investment?
The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.
